Wildlife Monitoring Bots (WiMoBo)
Project Overview: WiMoBo is a research initiative funded by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Its mission? To support scientific research aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Let’s dive into the key aspects:
Development:
WiMoBo focuses on advancing robust and fast control algorithms for aerial and marine robots. These algorithms play a crucial role in environmental monitoring tasks.
Imagine autonomous bots navigating diverse domains—air and water—collecting critical data to preserve wildlife.
Technology and Know-How:
Our goal is to generate cutting-edge technology and know-how for the development of autonomous vehicles equipped with on-board sensing instruments.
These vehicles become our eyes and ears in the natural world, aiding in data collection and analysis.
Applications:
WiMoBo aims to demonstrate the advantages of using robots across different domains:
Environmental Data Collection: Our bots enhance the quality of data collection, especially for greenhouse gases (GHGs).
Population Census of Pampas Deer: In the Argentinean National Park Campos del Tuyú, where the Pampas Deer population is endangered, WiMoBo conducts vital census work.
GHG Monitoring: By detecting high GHG concentrations, we contribute to mitigation efforts.
Global Goals Alignment:
Our project directly aligns with several SDGs:
Objective 14.1 and 15.1: Understanding and predicting impacts of global change on vulnerable ecosystems.
Objectives 6.3 and 6.6: Protecting and restoring water-related ecosystems, especially wetlands.
Objectives 13.3 and 13.1: Using multi-robot systems for GHG detection.
United Nations Goals:
Our contribution to the 17 Goals includes:
Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation.
Goal 13: Climate action.
Goal 14: Life below water.
Goal 15: Life on land.
Latest News:
We recently visited the Estación Biológica de Doñana, exploring collaborations with researchers who share similarities with our work in the wetland area.
Additionally, we hosted the Environmental Monitoring Workshop 2023 at the Spanish Royal Academy of Science. Experts from diverse fields discussed techniques and technologies for environmental monitoring12.
WiMoBo exemplifies our commitment to digital excellence, scientific progress, and the well-being of our planet. Let’s continue making a positive impact!
